Snow Possible in Columbia Here's When It Could Fall, Say Forecasters

Aiexpress – Snow is possible in South Carolina before the end of the week, and residents of the Columbia area may see some of it.

National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Rohrbach told The State on Sunday that there is a good likelihood of precipitation in the Midlands Friday night and Saturday morning. While the outlook is uncertain six days out, the National Weather Service says temperatures could drop low enough for snow.

If snow falls overnight Friday, Rohrbach predicts more than showers of snowflakes blowing around in the air.

According to Rohrbach, this could be the first time snow has fallen in the Columbia area since January of 2022. During the winter storm, the Midlands received 1 to 3 inches of snow on average.

The storm was Columbia’s first measurable snowfall since 2017, and it hadn’t seen more than an inch of snow since 2014, according to the National Weather Service.

Again, it’s too early in the prediction cycle to predict how much snow will fall overnight Friday. However, if snow does fall, the leftovers will most likely not last long.

If it snows, the precipitation is expected to turn back into rain, perhaps erasing any evidence of accumulation, Rohrbach said.

Rohrbach also said it’s too early to know if black ice will form on Columbia-area roads.

The prediction indicates that rain will begin in the Columbia area on Friday night. Multiple predictions suggest that temperatures will fall into the low 30s overnight, resulting in the chance of snow.

“Evening rain (will be) followed by a mix of rain and snow late,” weather.com reports.

Temperatures are expected to reach to the 40s by Saturday afternoon. A low of 27 degrees is possible overnight Saturday, although there is currently very little possibility of more precipitation at that time.

The present prognosis indicates that temperatures will be far below freezing by Friday. Lows in the mid-20s are expected Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, with highs only reaching the 40s during the day.

The National Weather Service issued a wind alert for Richland and Lexington counties, as well as the whole Midlands. It will take effect at 6 a.m. and last until 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service predicts gusty winds beginning Monday morning, with occasional gusts above 40 mph. The National Weather Service predicts sustained winds of up to 10-20 mph.

Powerful winds may blow around unsecured objects and cause significant damage to trees and branches, raising the chance of downed power lines and outages.

According to the forecast, some rain is expected Monday, with temperatures reaching 61 degrees. Following those rains, weather are expected to remain cool and dry until Friday.
