Hendersonville, Tennessee (Aiexpress) – According to court documents, an off-duty Hendersonville police officer was charged with driving under the influence and other offenses after being recorded speeding up to 104 mph on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard early Monday morning.
A deputy’s in-car radar reportedly detected a black 2015 Honda Accord speeding “104 mph in a 65 mph zone” on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6.
According to court filings, a Sumner County Sheriff’s Office officer attempted a traffic stop, but the car continued to travel at a high speed toward the New Shackle Island Road exit until coming to a stop at the traffic signal near the off-ramp.
The driver, identified as a Hendersonville Police Department officer, had “bloodshot-watery eyes,” according to court filings, and officers noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle.
When more deputies arrived, they discovered the officer handcuffed outside his car. The deputy who conducted the traffic stop allegedly stated that the officer instructed him to “turn off his body camera” after being asked to step out of the vehicle.
When the deputy refused, the cop repeatedly grabbed the camera and eventually grabbed the deputy’s wrist, according to officials. Body camera footage purportedly recorded the officer grabbing his keys from the bonnet of the arresting deputy’s patrol vehicle and starting to walk back to his car.
The deputy claimed he grabbed the cop to prevent him from fleeing, which resulted in a “brief struggle.” When another deputy came, both allegedly tried to get the officer under control, adding that the officer was warned to “stop multiple times” and issued “a taser warning,” according to court filings.
An officer from the Hendersonville Police Department eventually arrived on the scene and assisted deputies in handcuffing the driver. During the battle, one of the deputy’s body cameras was knocked off, and he sustained a “laceration to the left side of his left hand.”
Due to the attack and resisting arrest, the off-duty officer was asked to consent to a blood draw for testing rather than a field sobriety test. However, he refused and was brought to Sumner County Jail.
Law authorities discovered two small, unopened Jack Daniels bottles and two unopened White Claws in the vehicle. Court documents reveal that the off-duty cop was charged with driving under the influence, assault on a first responder, resisting arrest, and speeding.
He was later released on a $10,000 bail and scheduled to appear in Sumner County General Sessions Court on January 24.
