Conservative lawyer George Conway predicted that former President Trump would violate the gag order imposed by the New York judge supervising Trump’s hush money prosecution.
“At some point, I think, though, he can’t help himself,” Conway said of the former president on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “He’s going to end up violating the gag order, and that’s going to be an interesting, interesting moment.”
Conway’s remarks come after Judge Juan Merchan issued a gag order on Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, earlier this week. Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order forbids him from publicly criticizing witnesses, prosecutors, court personnel, or their families, particularly if such remarks aim to materially interfere with the case.
The order came after Trump’s repeated insults on social media, including those directed against Merchan’s daughter, Loren, a Democratic political consultant.
While the gag order did not prevent Trump from assaulting Merchan, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), or their families, the judge stated that his decision to issue the order was based on the “nature and impact” of allegations made against him, a “family member,” and two prosecutors.
“He’s always going to find the one thing that he can do—iif there’s a list of things that he cannot do and that he doesn’t think he can get away with—aand he has no compunction about it,” Conway, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, said. “He has no conscience.”
The lawyer, who is currently going through a divorce from former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, stated that he anticipates Trump will eventually feel tempted to push the boundaries, potentially leading to a breach of the gag order.
“I mean, he’s arguably already violated some other gag orders, but we’re going to see him pushing the envelope as much as possible, particularly when he actually gets into that courtroom on April 15 and has to sit there and listen to all the evidence against them and listen to the arguments against them,” he said.
Merchan’s gag order is the third Trump has received in recent months, following restrictions limiting his speech in his New York civil fraud case and his federal criminal case related to efforts to sway the 2020 election outcomes.
In New York, Trump faces 34 counts, charging that he fraudulently manipulated business documents while reimbursing his ex-fixer, Michael Cohen, for arranging a payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to conceal an affair before the 2016 election. He’s pleaded not guilty.
