ODOT Warns Drivers Several Snow Plows Struck by Vehicles in the Past Week

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is warning drivers to be more cautious after several snowplows were hit by passing vehicles last week. This reminder comes after reports that drivers have been attempting to pass snowplows during snowy weather, which can be very dangerous.

ODOT says passing a snowplow is illegal when there is no clear lane and no way to see ahead. This is especially true when snowplows are using retractable wing blades, which extend eight feet into the right lane. On some multi-lane highways, snowplows use dual wing blades that extend from both sides of the truck.

Warren Nelson, a crew coordinator with ODOT in Bend, shared a message for drivers: “Please don’t pass us. Leave enough room and understand that we are working hard to keep the roads safe and traffic moving.” According to ODOT, any damage to the snowplows from being hit can take the equipment out of service, which makes it harder to clear the roads.

ODOT advises that the safest option is to stay several car lengths behind a snowplow. The plows will slow down at times to let vehicles safely pass. This helps reduce the risk of accidents and ensures that the snowplows can do their job of clearing snow and ice.
