Originally set to take effect in 2020, the Real ID enforcement deadline was delayed to 2025 due to widespread transaction backlogs at Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offices during the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, however, the DHS has confirmed there will be no further extensions.
Who Needs a Real ID?
Individuals aged 18 and older will require a Real ID-compliant identification card or driver’s license to fly domestically unless they possess an alternative TSA-approved form of identification, such as:

- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- U.S. Department of Defense ID
- Border crossing card
- Tribal ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation

To obtain a Real ID, residents must visit their state’s driver’s licensing agency. The application process typically takes about two weeks, so applying well ahead of the May 2025 deadline is advised.
