Wintry Weather Expected to Bring Slick Travel Conditions to Northeast Kansas This Weekend

AIexpress – The National Weather Service said Wednesday that between Saturday evening and Sunday evening, sleet, snow, and freezing rain will mix, making driving slippery and dangerous across most of northeast Kansas.

The Topeka office of the National Weather Service said on its website that sleet, freezing rain, and moderate to heavy snow were likely in the Kansas City, Abilene, Topeka, and Manhattan areas.

That graphic showed that Concordia, Marysville, and Hiawatha are in the north and will likely see mild to heavy snow. Emporia and Garnett are in the south and will likely see mostly sleet and freezing rain.

“It’s still too soon for exact numbers, but confidence continues to increase for an impactful winter storm Saturday night into Sunday across the entire area,” it stated. “Expect some north or south adjustments as we get closer to Sunday, but overall we’re expecting more snow father north and more sleet/freezing rain farther south.”

Forecasters say that driving will be dangerous and take longer than usual in the affected area.

“Freezing rain and sleet are more likely early, and snow is more likely late,” the weather service said in an image on its Topeka office’s website Wednesday afternoon.

The map showed that there was a 50% to 60% chance that at least minor effects would happen in the Topeka area on Saturday night and Sunday. Areas north of Topeka had a 60% to 70% chance of at least minor affects happening.

“Higher chances for ice accumulation prior to the change to snow are near and south of Interstate 70,” it stated.
