18-year-old Woman And 25-year-old Man Killed In East Harlem Shooting

A young woman and man were killed after being shot in the head on an East Harlem street on Sunday, according to authorities.

According to detectives, gunfire erupted at the corner of E. 128th St. and Lexington Ave. shortly after 7:25 p.m., just a few yards from P.S. 30M Hernandez-Hughes Elementary.

When officers arrived, they located Ashley Ballard, 18, and Harry Mendoza, 25, with gunshot wounds to the head.

Both victims were taken to Harlem Hospital, where Ballard was pronounced dead. Mendoza died late Sunday night.

A witness reported hearing two gunshots as officers searched for camera footage Sunday night.

“They happened, like, at the same time,” said adjacent deli employee Amir Mohammed, who hears gunshots in the area “from time to time.”

Police were still investigating the fatal shooting, so it was unclear why the victims were targeted.

There were no immediate arrests.

“A lot of us are frustrated, and it comes out with violence,” said neighbor David Grant. “That’s why everyone needs to get involved to better our community.”

Ballard lived in East Harlem, while Mendoza resided in Washington Heights, according to police.
