Guatemalan Citizen Arrested by ICE for Crimes in Rhode Island

Aiexpress – On February 6, 2024, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) based in Boston made an announcement. They were able to apprehend an individual from Guatemala who was unlawfully present in Rhode Island.

Todd M. Lyons, the Director of the ERO Boston Field Office, expressed his concerns over the actions of a Guatemalan national who has shown no regard for U.S. immigration laws. This individual has been charged with committing heinous crimes against a child in Rhode Island. The ERO Boston team is committed to apprehending and deporting such egregious offenders who target the most vulnerable members of our society. Their unwavering dedication is focused on ensuring the safety of residents in the New England communities they serve.

ERO says the Guatemalan person entered the United States illegally on an unknown date and in an unknown place, without being checked out, accepted, or given parole by an immigration official.

In March 2023, authorities in Providence, Rhode Island, apprehended a man on charges of felony child molestation. Following his arrest, ERO Boston issued an immigration detainer against the individual, who was a Guatemalan citizen, while he was held at the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston, Rhode Island. However, the facility disregarded the ICE detainer and released him in April 2023, following an order from the Sixth District Court of Providence.

The Guatemalan citizen will stay in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement while they undergo removal proceedings before a federal immigration judge at the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review within the Justice Department operates independently from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In the courts of the Executive Office for Immigration Review, immigration judges evaluate each case on its own merits. They assess whether a noncitizen should be subject to a final order of removal or if they qualify for specific forms of relief from removal.
