Flynn stated that it is not possible to regulate devices that are entering the city from neighboring areas.
According to Torres, federal legislation is ultimately irreplaceable.
Flynn emphasized the importance of enacting the legislation, stating, “Yes, we really need that legislation enacted.”
The FDNY reported that in 2023, there were a total of 267 fires, resulting in 150 injuries and 18 fatalities in New York City, all caused by lithium-ion batteries. As of Monday, the department has already conducted 24 investigations into lithium-ion battery fires and recorded eight injuries across the five boroughs this year.
