Hunter Biden Own Defense May Have Been Undermined: Legal Analyst

Aiexpress – Legal analyst Jonathan Turley suggests that Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, may have unintentionally undermined his defense attorney’s argument in his federal gun case during a recent interview with Axios.

Hunter Biden, the president’s son, has been candid about his battle with drug addiction. In September, federal prosecutors charged him with three felonies for allegedly providing false information on a federal background check form when he bought a handgun in October 2018. Additionally, Hunter Biden is currently dealing with federal tax evasion charges that were filed against him in December.

During a recent interview with Axios, Hunter Biden emphasized the significance of his sobriety in his father’s bid for re-election. As Republican lawmakers continue to scrutinize Joe Biden’s family as part of an indictment inquiry into the president, any public misstep by his son could exert a significant impact on his 2024 campaign.

During his father’s first presidential campaign, Hunter Biden shared his personal journey towards sobriety. He revealed that his initial sobriety date was May 17, 2019, just a day before his father entered the 2020 election. However, he later admitted to having a “drink or two” after that, and officially recognized June 1, 2019, as his sobriety date.

During a recent appearance on Fox News, Turley, an attorney and professor at George Washington University Law School, expressed his concerns about Hunter Biden’s sobriety timeline in relation to his defense against federal gun charges. Turley’s remarks came in response to Biden’s interview with Axios.

According to Turley, the issue with his interview with Axios is that he undermined the potential defense strategy proposed by his counsel, Abbe Lowell. Turley explained to Fox News’ Bret Baier that Lowell had suggested they could argue that Hunter Biden was sober when he signed the false statement.

In September, Lowell expressed to CNN’s Erin Burnett that there was no evidence to support the claim that Hunter Biden was struggling with a drug addiction at the time he purchased the gun. Lowell further argued that the indictment should be dismissed, asserting in a December motion that the law used to charge Hunter Biden violates the Second Amendment, which guarantees citizens the right to bear arms.

According to the Department of Justice, Lowell’s argument has been deemed a misinterpretation of the gun laws in question. In a court filing in January, federal prosecutors also stated that an FBI chemist had determined last year that a pouch used by Hunter Biden to hold his gun had detected cocaine residue.

According to Turley, he responded to Hunter Biden’s interview on his website and expressed his thoughts. Turley noted that it is increasingly challenging to argue that Hunter Biden was sober at the time of signing the background check form, considering his claim that his sobriety date came over eight months later.

According to the attorney, Hunter has now confirmed what was already evident in his book – his addiction persisted until after his father’s presidential announcement.
