According to a report, the Biden administration is considering the possibility of utilizing Guantanamo Bay as a means to handle Haitian migrants in the event of a large-scale exodus from their gang-stricken country.
The Caribbean island has been swept by a wave of violence in recent weeks, causing concerns about a possible increase in illegal immigration from Haiti. This comes at a time when the United States is already dealing with a surge in migrant encounters at its southern border during President Biden’s administration.
According to a US official, the proposed strategy to utilize Guantanamo Bay as a processing site involves the enlargement of an existing migrant center on the naval base. It’s important to note that this center is distinct from the military prison where numerous high-profile terrorist suspects are currently held.
For over 30 years, the US Coast Guard has utilized the Migrant Operations Center in Guantanamo as a shelter for migrants apprehended in the Caribbean. Located approximately 200 miles west of Haiti, it has served as a crucial facility in handling this ongoing issue.
According to the outlet, Guantanamo Bay had been prepared for a potential influx of Haitian migrants in 2010, following a devastating earthquake in the country.
The Biden administration also explored the possibility of utilizing the migrant center at Guantanamo Bay as a temporary holding facility for Haitians seeking refuge from a previous increase in gang-related violence on the island.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken action to safeguard the state by deploying soldiers to protect against an influx of migrants from Haiti who are seeking refuge amidst the ongoing turmoil in their home country.
The White House did not provide a response when The Post reached out for comment.
