Former Rep. George Santos announced on Friday that he is parting ways with the Republican Party.

The measure was passed with a vote of 286 to 134, with a majority of Republicans opposing it. Following its passage, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia took action by filing a “motion to vacate,” which sets the stage for a future vote to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“After the disappointing performance witnessed in today’s session of the house, I have taken the time to reflect and come to the decision that I can no longer remain associated with the Republican Party. It is disheartening to witness the continuous deceit and manipulation of the party towards its voter base. It goes against my principles to align myself with a party that lacks any substantial beliefs and falls victim to every situation. Consequently, I am officially putting a halt to my efforts in #NY01 to gain access to the ballot as a Republican candidate. Instead, I will be pursuing an independent candidacy. In the upcoming November elections, I will proudly present my unwavering support for Ultra MAGA/Trump values as an Independent candidate,” Santos expressed on X.

Santos had already made it known that he intended to run against Republican Rep. Nick LaLota in New York’s First Congressional District, encompassing eastern Long Island.
