Ethics committee investigates campaign finances of Texas Rep. Troy Nehls

The House Ethics Committee has initiated an investigation into Rep. Troy Nehls, a Republican from Texas, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The committee has not provided details about the nature of its investigation and has stated that it will release another update on the matter by May 10. The independent Office of Congressional Ethics initially brought this issue to the committee’s attention in December.

According to a statement from Mississippi Rep. Michael Guest, the ethics chair, and Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the ranking Democrat, the Committee emphasizes that the referral or extension of a matter, along with the mandatory disclosure of such information and the subject’s name, should not be automatically interpreted as evidence of a violation or a judgment by the Committee.

In a statement released after the ethics committee’s announcement, Nehls emphasized his commitment to cooperation and transparency.

According to him, the issue was related to campaign funds.

“I am eager to cooperate with the House Committee on Ethics as they investigate the finances of my campaign,” he expressed. “I want to assure everyone that my campaign has followed all the regulations set by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and I have been transparent with my financial records.”

Nehls, a former sheriff, was elected for the first time in 2020.
