House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, extended a formal invitation to President Joe Biden, urging him to testify before the panel. This invitation comes as part of a Republican-led impeachment inquiry into allegations that Biden utilized his position for personal gain through his family’s foreign business ventures. It is important to note that Biden has vehemently denied these allegations.
The committee suggested April 16 as the date for the hearing, as stated in a letter by Comer. He further asserted that the Committee’s investigation has faced opposition from the White House.
The impeachment inquiry, initially initiated solely by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and later approved by the House along party lines, has not produced any substantial evidence against the president.
In his statement on Thursday, Comer argued that there exists a significant disparity between what Biden has publicly stated and the committee’s actual work.
Comer, the Chairman of the Committee, has requested the president to address the questions presented in the letter. Additionally, he extended an invitation for the president to participate in a public hearing. This hearing would provide an opportunity for the president to provide sworn explanations regarding their involvement with their family’s sources of income and the methods employed to generate it.
In his own statement, Speaker Mike Johnson echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for the President to address the significant outstanding questions that have arisen from their inquiry.
At the conclusion of the latest impeachment hearing, the oversight chairman, a Republican from Kentucky, expressed his intention to request Biden’s testimony.
During the hearing held earlier this month, House Republicans brought up long-standing allegations of impropriety surrounding the Biden family. Democrats, on the other hand, attempted to portray the investigation as a politically motivated attack.
According to Comer, “The Bidens market Joe Biden. That’s what they do for a living.”
“Today may very well signal the conclusion of what can be deemed as one of the most colossal failures in the annals of congressional investigations,” retorted Rep. Jamie Raskin, the esteemed Democrat leading the committee. “Their relentless pursuit to uncover a high crime or misdemeanor committed by Joe Biden, and subsequently impeach him for it, appears to have reached its end.”
When asked for comment on Thursday regarding Comer’s letter, the White House referred back to earlier statements made by spokesman Ian Sams. Sams has consistently denounced the impeachment proceedings.
Last week, Sams expressed his disappointment on social media, referring to the recent impeachment as a futile and disheartening spectacle.
