In the 2023 season, the NFL rewarded players with an extra $393.8 million in performance-based pay. This program aims to provide additional compensation to players who exceeded expectations by considering their playing time and salary levels.
Purdy received a significant boost to his earnings, with an extra paycheck amounting to $739,795. This amount represents 75.1% of his base salary of $985,000 in 2023. It is worth noting that this additional payout ranks as the 24th highest in terms of size this year.
Last season, Purdy had a remarkable performance for the Niners. He not only set a franchise record for passing yards with an incredible 4,280, but he also joined the elite company of quarterbacks like Jeff Garcia by throwing 30-plus touchdown passes in a season. This outstanding achievement earned him his first-ever Pro Bowl selection.
In his second season in the NFL, Purdy garnered enough recognition to finish fourth in the Most Valuable Player voting. However, since he is not yet eligible for a lucrative contract extension, the only way for him to earn additional compensation based on his performance was through the performance-based pay incentive.
Next year could bring about a significant change for the San Francisco 49ers. According to team owner Jed York, the Niners are already making preparations to secure Purdy as their franchise quarterback. This statement was made by York during the league meetings last week.
According to York, having a highly paid quarterback is actually a positive situation. He believes that it is only natural for quarterbacks to ask for substantial compensation because they hold one of the most crucial positions in not just football, but in all sports. York emphasizes the significance of the quarterback role and supports the idea of them being well compensated.
Purdy stands out as the sole quarterback among the top 25 players on the performance-based pay distribution list. This list is primarily populated by offensive linemen, who occupy seven out of the top nine spots.
Former Baltimore Ravens guard John Simpson leads the pack with a staggering payout of $974,613, almost doubling his salary from the previous season. Simpson, who played on a one-year minimum contract worth $1.01 million, recently inked a lucrative two-year agreement with the New York Jets. This new deal has the potential to earn him an impressive $18 million.
The top five players in terms of salary are Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship, who earns $923,059, followed by Buffalo Bills tackle Spencer Brown, who earns $912,723. Cincinnati Bengals guard Cordell Volson comes in at third place with a salary of $905,972, while Miami Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou earns $878,167.
