Mother Ignored Her Son’s Desperate Texts While Her 3-year-old Brother Died Alone At Home, Choosing To Drink And Sleep At Her Boyfriend’s House: DA

A 25-year-old Massachusetts mother of three allegedly left her sick 3-year-old son at home alone with his two older siblings so she could go out drinking on a Saturday night and sleep over at her boyfriend’s place, only to return home the next morning to discover the child deceased. Worse, prosecutors say she disregarded her 8-year-old son’s desperate texts about his brother.

Jennifer Prudencio appeared in court on Wednesday to face involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges in connection with the weekend death of Yael Guardado-Prudencio, her 3-year-old son, whom she knew was ill.

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden had already described the case as a “tragedy beyond words” in his initial statement, but prosecutors under his supervision provided further information in court.

Prudencio is accused of abandoning Guardado-Prudencio in their Chelsea apartment, leaving only his 8-year-old and 7-year-old siblings to watch him while she went out drinking at a Revere bar—ddespite knowing the youngest boy was sick.

“Generally, the child suffered from a seizure disorder and hemophilia and had been vomiting blood in the days prior to his death,” Assistant DA Audrey Mark stated in court, according to local ABC affiliate WCVB. “He also fell while having a seizure, resulting in a gushing laceration on his face that was not healing properly. During that week, the defendant took the child to the doctor twice.

Mark claimed that Prudencio “drank alcohol for a number of hours” at the bar and decided to stay at her boyfriend’s place in Somerville rather than go home to her children, and that the defendant was unmoved by the texts her worried 8-year-old son sent, which included a video of the dying victim’s condition, according to local NBC affiliate WBTS.

She allegedly promised the boy she’d be returning shortly, but instead spent the night at her boyfriend’s house. By 10 a.m. on Sunday, when Prudencio returned home, Yael Guardado-Prudencio had died, according to prosecutors.

Prudencio appeared “distraught” at times after entering the courtroom, according to her counsel.

The defense was unsuccessful in its efforts to obtain a modest bail, as the judge imposed bail at $100,000, more than ten times the amount asked by Prudencio’s counsel.
