Ground beef patties transported to Iowa have been recalled due to E. coli contamination

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a recall for approximately 7,000 pounds of raw beef. This recall is a result of concerns regarding possible E. coli contamination.

The USDA announced on December 31 that Valley Meats, LLC shipped potentially contaminated items to Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of E. coli-related reactions due to these products.

The issue came to light when the establishment informed FSIS that samples of ground beef products, which were sent to a third-party laboratory for microbiological analysis, yielded positive results for E. coli O157:H7, according to the USDA release.

E. coli infection symptoms

Exposure to E. coli, a potentially life-threatening bacteria, can lead to the following symptoms:

    • dehydration
    • bloody diherrea
    • abdominal cramps

Symptoms of E. coli infection typically emerge within two to eight days after exposure. While the majority of individuals infected with E. coli recover within a week, there is a risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is characterized by kidney failure. It is important to note that HUS is predominantly observed in children under 5 years old and older adults.

If you notice easy bruising, pale skin, or a decrease in urine output, it is important to seek immediate medical attention.
