Former President Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, responded to claims that he may be seeking foreign sources to fund his hefty legal bills, saying Wednesday she “can’t speak” about the approach.
Rumors about Trump’s business future are flying as he strives to settle the $454 million owed in his New York civil fraud case just days before the deadline. Trump detractors wonder if the former president could obtain the funds from a foreign source, such as Saudi Arabia or Russia.
“Well, the rules and regulations are public. “I can’t talk about strategy because it requires certain things, and we have to follow those rules,” Habba told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum on Wednesday.
“As I already stated, this is clearly an injustice. It’s impossible. It is impossible. “I believe they knew,” she said, alluding to the bail amount.
Trump’s legal team stated in court Monday that it would be “impossible” to collect the money he owes. His attorneys stated that they spent “countless hours” negotiating with “one of the largest insurance companies in the world” and approached 30 companies to obtain a full bond for the case.
Last month, a New York judge ordered Trump to pay roughly $355 million in penalties and interest after determining that he colluded to misrepresent his net worth in order to obtain higher tax and insurance benefits. The total currently exceeds $454 million due to daily interest increases of almost $112,000.
Habba claimed the “ridiculous amount of money” was established “intentionally” and that Trump’s other legal battles, including his election interference cases, were “ringing steady, loudly, and true” throughout the trial.
“And we’re seeing it—iit’s the demise of our country, not the demise of Trump,” she went on to say. “So, we’ll handle it as we always have, keep our heads up, and keep working hard.”
Trump has a Monday deadline to acquire a bond or pay the full amount. If he fails to fulfill the deadline, New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), who initially filed the fraud case against Trump, has stated that she may seize part of his assets.
