Arizona Democrat Reveals Cancer Diagnoses

Representative Raúl Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, revealed on Tuesday that he has received a cancer diagnosis.

Grijalva, a representative of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District since 2003, shared in a statement that he had undergone treatment for a persistent cough a few weeks ago. While initially diagnosed with pneumonia, further testing revealed the presence of cancer.

“This diagnosis has been challenging to come to terms with, but I have faith in the comprehensive treatment plan that my medical team has devised, and I have already started my fight against this cancer,” expressed Grijalva optimistically.

Raúl Grijalva, a prominent Democrat, holds several key positions within the US House of Representatives. He is the leading Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee and serves as a member of the Education and Labor Committee. Additionally, Grijalva is the Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is an active member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Grijalva assured that his offices will continue operating and providing uninterrupted services.

“I continue to work and stay in regular communication with my staff while undergoing treatment,” he stated.

Over the past few years, several lawmakers have experienced health concerns while continuing to serve in office and hold leadership positions.

Several incidents last year raised concerns about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) experiencing freezing episodes. This year, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) underwent treatment for blood cancer. Additionally, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) was elected after recovering from a stroke suffered on the 2022 campaign trail. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) also had to undergo intestinal surgery earlier this year.

Grijalva has requested privacy as he manages his own diagnoses.

Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.), who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, expressed her support and concern for Grijalva, his family, and loved ones. She mentioned that they are all in the thoughts and prayers of the CHC.

“Grijalva is highly respected among his colleagues and is a prominent figure in Congress, serving as the Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee. Every day, he passionately advocates for our nation’s public lands, natural resources, and tribes,” Barragán expressed. “Throughout his more than two decades in the U.S. House of Representatives, he has been a dedicated public servant, committed to the people he represents in Arizona. His experience and wisdom make him a valuable voice within our Caucus. The CHC stands in solidarity with Raúl and his Congressional staff during his fight against cancer, and we are confident that he will approach this battle with his characteristic determination and strength.”
