Belgium opens Investigation into Russian propaganda group targeting EU elections

Belgium has initiated an investigation into a pro-Russian propaganda network that is alleged to have paid members of the European Parliament in order to promote the Kremlin’s agenda.

During a news conference, Prime Minister Alexander de Croo revealed that the nation’s federal prosecutor has initiated a formal investigation.

De Croo emphasized that the interference has been confirmed by judicial authorities and is therefore subject to prosecution.

Russia benefits on the battlefield when support for Ukraine weakens.

According to De Croo, Russia’s primary objective is to increase its influence in the European Parliament by promoting candidates who support its agenda.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced that the federal prosecutor has decided to open an investigation into the influencing of a democratic institution within the country. He stated, “The influencing is, of course, with regard to a democratic institution that has a seat in our country, so the federal prosecutor has decided to open an investigation on what has happened there.” This move highlights the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring accountability for any wrongdoing.

The upcoming elections of the EU are scheduled to take place from June 6 to June 9. According to De Croo, the Russian proxy group is exerting its influence to promote pro-Kremlin MEP candidates.

Accusations of Russian influence are not a recent development.

Both the Polish and Czech governments have accused the Voice of Europe news website of being funded by Russian money. According to these governments, the website is involved in spreading propaganda and raising funds for politicians who are aligned with Moscow.

Recently, the Czech government announced that it has successfully dismantled a network of influence with pro-Kremlin ties.

During Friday’s news conference, De Croo stated that the investigation revealed Moscow’s efforts to engage with European members of parliament and even provide financial incentives to promote a Russian agenda.

According to the prime minister, Belgian intelligence has verified the presence of pro-Russian spy networks in various European countries, including Belgium.
