Colombia police detained 73-year-old American for giving “cannabis tours”

An American citizen was apprehended by Colombian authorities on Tuesday for reportedly organizing “cannabis tours” in his residence, offering tourists an opportunity to partake in the experience for $30. This unique form of travel has led to his arrest.

According to a statement from the Colombian national police, a 73-year-old man in Sabaneta, a town south of the city of Medellín, used social media and a foreign visitors’ website to advertise his house.

He distributed flyers promoting “Cannabis Farm Tours” conducted by “Cannabis Jimmy.” The promotional materials mentioned the availability of “free samples” during the tours. Each tour had a group size ranging from 2 to 8 individuals, and advance reservations were mandatory.

During the tours, which typically lasted between 2-3 hours, the man enthusiastically educated visitors on the intricate process of planting, caring for, harvesting, and maintaining this remarkable plant. As an added bonus, tour-takers had the opportunity to purchase marijuana directly from the man, with each gram priced at a reasonable $20.

During the arrest, law enforcement officials seized a total of 1,380 grams of marijuana. Although the individual remains unnamed, authorities have disclosed that he is of American nationality.

Colombia has been grappling with the challenge of effectively managing the trafficking, manufacturing, and possession of narcotics within its boundaries for quite some time.

In late 2020, the Colombian Navy discovered a stranded boat that was transporting 33 kilograms of cocaine and 744 kilograms of marijuana.

Colombia, the South American nation, holds the title of being the largest exporter of cocaine globally. An astounding 90% of the cocaine that reaches the United States annually originates from this country.
