Democratic Sen. Menendez Announces He Won’t Run For Re-election, Hints At Potential Independent Run

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez announced on Thursday that he will not be seeking another term as a Democrat, amidst corruption and other charges that he vehemently denies. However, he has not ruled out the possibility of running as an independent candidate in November.

“I won’t be running for the Democratic primary this June,” he stated in a heartfelt video message. “I remain optimistic that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing this summer, which will enable me to continue my campaign as an independent Democrat in the upcoming general election.”

He expressed his intentions by stating, “This would give me the opportunity to not only remind the people of New Jersey about my accomplishments as their advocate, but also about how we can ensure our financial stability, overcome the challenges of raising a family, owning a home, providing for a college education, and creating a more peaceful world for everyone to thrive in.”

If Menendez decides to run as an independent candidate, he would undoubtedly face a tough competition from the Democratic nominee, considering the state’s strong partisan inclination. The current frontrunners in the primary race are Tammy Murphy, wife of Governor Phil Murphy, and Representative Andy Kim.

Prosecutors have alleged that Menendez conspired with his wife and a businessman to act as an agent of Egypt. The criminal accusations claim that Menendez was supposed to receive bribe payments in exchange for helping to lift a block on U.S. military aid to Egypt.

Furthermore, there have been allegations made against him regarding the acceptance of bribes in return for providing favors to the government of Qatar.

In his video, Menendez once again asserted his innocence, as he has consistently done since his indictment in September. His wife, too, has denied any wrongdoing.

“I understand that many of you are feeling hurt and disappointed in light of the accusations I am currently facing. I want to assure you that I am innocent until proven guilty, and I ask for your support during this challenging time. It is important for us all to remember the principle of justice and to withhold judgment until the legal process has taken its course,” he shared.

During his taped statement, he primarily emphasized his achievements during his tenure in the Senate, particularly highlighting his efforts following Hurricane Sandy and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
