According to the Metropolitan Police, a man drove his car into the gates of Buckingham Palace over the weekend.
The man, who has not been publicly recognized, smashed into the gates of the royal home in central London at 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, officials said. He was transported to the hospital following the incident.
Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. Officials did not immediately reveal the man’s name.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances,” Metropolitan Police said.
According to the BBC, the crash is not being investigated as a terrorist incident. According to Buckingham Palace, no members of the royal family were present at the time of the collision.
The gate was seen covered in wooden boards in the images from the scene on Sunday.
According to the Royal Family, Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the United Kingdom’s sovereigns since 1837. Currently, it acts as the administrative headquarters of the monarch.
In a surprising incident last year, mere days before the coronation of King Charles III, authorities detained a man outside Buckingham Palace. The individual had thrown several items, including suspected shotgun cartridges, into the grounds of the Palace, as reported by London’s Metropolitan Police.
