The tariffs aim to stabilize the European Union market, combat the illegal appropriation of grain from occupied Ukraine, and prevent Russia from using grain revenue from the EU to support its ongoing military aggression against Ukraine.
In a statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her proposal to impose tariffs on Russian imports. The purpose of these tariffs is to address the increasing risk that Russian imports pose to the European markets and farmers. By implementing these tariffs, it is expected that Russia’s ability to exploit the EU for the benefit of its war machine will be reduced. Furthermore, von der Leyen emphasized the European Union’s commitment to preserving global food security, particularly for developing countries.
Following the EU’s decision to extend tariff-free access to the EU market for Ukrainian farm products, this action has been taken.
The agreement extends the temporary suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural products until June 5, 2025.
Belarus has been included in the proposed tariffs by the European Commission due to its close ties with Russia and its decision to allow Russian troops to stage there for the invasion of Ukraine.
To prevent Russia from bypassing the new tariffs through the use of Belarus, the proposed action would be implemented.
The European Commission expressed its commitment to defending its values and founding principles in a statement. It emphasized that Europe remains united and determined to support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression, which has spanned over two years.
