Ex-Trump adviser seeks release from prison while awaiting appeal

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro is appealing to Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch to reconsider Chief Justice John Roberts’ decision denying Navarro’s request to remain out of prison during his appeal for contempt of Congress.

Navarro arrived at the Miami prison on March 19th, following his conviction in September. He was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with the House Select Committee’s investigation into the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In a filing on Tuesday, Stanley Woodward, the attorney representing Navarro, respectfully requested that the Chief Justice reconsider the denial.

Woodward stated in the filing that the D.C. Circuit court has established a “briefing schedule in his appeal” that will not be completed until July 19, 2024, which is after Navarro is expected to finish serving his four-month prison term.

Justice Roberts stated in March that he had no reason to disagree with the lower courts, which had also denied Navarro’s request.

During Navarro’s trial, David Buckley, the former staff director of the Jan. 6 committee, testified that the House panel had expressed interest in questioning Navarro regarding his involvement in delaying Congress’ certification of the 2020 election. Navarro had referred to this plan as the “Green Bay Sweep” in his book “In Trump Time.”

Despite Navarro’s efforts, his argument claiming that former President Donald Trump had exercised executive privilege to protect his testimony and document production was ultimately unsuccessful.
