Former NATO leader urges US not to withhold Ukraine aid, warns Putin won’t back down

Former NATO commander, James Stavridis, is passionately urging the Biden administration and lawmakers to refrain from withholding aid to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a recent interview, he expressed his concerns about the current situation, stating, “Where are we today?” He emphasized that the stalemate that existed was broken when the U.S. aid started to run out. As a consequence, he pointed out that the Russians have started to make progress. He firmly believes that this situation will not improve unless the U.S. provides an additional $60 billion in aid.

It is believed that he was referring to a national security funding package passed by the Senate, which includes $60 billion in aid for Ukraine. However, this legislation has not made much progress as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has refused to bring it to the floor without certain concessions. These concessions include provisions for security along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Retired Admiral James Stavridis addressed the concern over the $60 billion budget by stating that although it may seem like a substantial sum, it is relatively small in comparison to the overall U.S. defense budget of approximately $900 billion.

According to the former NATO chief, if Ukraine does not receive more aid, there is a real possibility that Putin will be able to seize more territory. He likened the situation to watching Adolf Hitler’s Germany aggressively advancing across Europe.

Hollywood celebrities like Sean Penn, Barbra Streisand, and Mark Hamill have joined the chorus in urging Congress to take action and provide increased support for Ukraine.

Johnson, despite his resistance to the bill supported by the Senate, has made a commitment to progress a legislation that will offer Ukraine with extra resources.
