In February, the report had made questionable and contentious claims regarding the president’s memory and age. Despite these findings, Garland firmly stated his belief in Biden’s capability to serve as the nation’s leader.
During a House Appropriations hearing, Garland expressed his complete confidence in the president, emphasizing his own observations as a member of the National Security Council and the president’s Cabinet.
According to Hur’s report, “We conclude that no criminal charges are warranted in this matter” because the evidence does not establish Mr. Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Hur’s report provided a rather bleak portrayal of the president, highlighting his occasional struggles with memory and his inability to recall certain key events, such as when he completed his term as vice president or when his son Beau passed away. This depiction was quickly seized upon by his political adversaries.
Biden, along with his aides and attorneys, vehemently refuted that assessment.
During a press conference, the president expressed his outrage and disbelief, exclaiming, “How in the hell dare he raise that?” in response to a question regarding the recent report. He further emphasized his independence, stating, “I don’t need anyone to remind me when he [Beau] passed away or that he passed away.”
During a questioning session with lawmakers in March, Hur defended his assessment of Biden’s memory, emphasizing that he provided a necessary, accurate, and fair explanation in his report. He firmly stated, “I did not sanitize my explanation.”
He chose not to directly comment on whether he personally believed that Hur’s detailed descriptions of Biden’s mental acuity were appropriate to include.
On Tuesday, he provided his most detailed personal defense of Biden since the report was released. However, he made it clear that he did not intend to directly comment on the report while speaking to lawmakers.
