Joe Lieberman, Longtime Senator And 2000 Vice Presidential Pick, Passes Away At Age 82

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, was a close friend of both Joe Lieberman and John McCain. He expressed his intention to share more thoughts about his friend in the near future. Interestingly, Graham learned about McCain’s passing while he was in Israel.

In a heartfelt statement signed “From the Last Amigo,” John McCain expressed his concern about the current state of affairs to God. While acknowledging that he is in the hands of a loving God, McCain candidly shared that he has been giving Him an earful about the messed-up situation.

Lieberman also played a crucial role as a founding chairman of No Labels, a centrist political group aiming to establish a foundation for a third-party presidential “unity ticket” in 2024.

During an interview with Bloomberg TV last week, Lieberman expressed that the group is actively searching for exceptional candidates for No Labels. He mentioned that they are in the process of evaluating a couple of highly qualified individuals and anticipate making a decision within the next two or three weeks.

“I hold a great deal of admiration and genuine fondness for Joe Biden. However, it is unfortunate that he has been swayed towards the left, just like the Democratic Party, which is now disproportionately influenced by its more progressive faction,” he expressed. “Thomas Jefferson once wisely remarked that America requires occasional political rebellion, just as storms are necessary in the natural world. I believe he meant that it is crucial to remove outdated ideas and practices from our political system. Undoubtedly, our current political landscape could greatly benefit from a powerful storm and a political rebellion. Hopefully, we can present our voters with that very choice in the upcoming elections.”

No Labels expressed in a statement that Lieberman was the “moral center” of the movement and described his passing as unexpected.

The group praised Senator Lieberman’s legislative record, but emphasized that it only scratched the surface of his impact on America’s public life. They commended his uncommon integrity and his commitment to doing what was right for the right reasons. In an era of increasingly divisive and hostile politics, Senator Lieberman stood out for his unwavering civility and decency, which he extended to both his political allies and opponents.

Messages of condolences poured in from all corners of the globe and from politicians representing a wide range of ideologies.

“Although Joe Lieberman and I didn’t always agree, I have great respect for his remarkable career in public service, which spanned four decades dedicated to advocating for the people of Connecticut,” expressed former President Barack Obama on social media. “He played a crucial role in the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ and was instrumental in the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Despite the challenging political landscape surrounding these issues, he remained steadfast in his principles, driven by a strong conviction that they were the right course of action. Michelle and I send our heartfelt condolences to Hadassah and the Lieberman family during this difficult time.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described him as “an incredibly kind and loyal personal friend,” while Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine praised Lieberman as not only one of the finest legislators she has ever known but also one of the most outstanding human beings.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut described Lieberman as a unique individual.

Connecticut is in a state of shock following the sudden passing of Senator Lieberman. In a time where political figures often seem indistinguishable from one another, Joe Lieberman stood out as a unique and singular individual. According to Murphy’s social media post, Lieberman was known for his unwavering commitment to fighting for what he believed was right, and he did so with great success. His dedication to the state he held dear was evident throughout his career.

The funeral for him will take place on Friday at Congregation Agudath Sholom in his hometown of Stamford. There will be a memorial service at a later date.
