Aiexpress – The Mexican government has established a checkpoint near a U.S. border gap in response to migrants utilizing the opening, referred to as the San Judas Break, to unlawfully cross the border into the United States, as verified by 60 Minutes.
According to local residents assisting migrants, they have relocated and are currently crossing the border at a different location, approximately four miles east of the San Judas Break. This new area poses more challenges as it is more difficult to access, necessitating several hours of walking. Unlike the previous spot where smugglers would use SUVs to transport migrants, this new location is not directly reachable by vehicles.
The San Judas Break has gained global recognition. In the span of four days last month, 60 Minutes observed approximately 600 migrants, including both adults and children, passing through a narrow 4-foot opening at the end of a border fence located 60 miles east of San Diego. These migrants navigated their way through the gap by carefully maneuvering under the razor wire.
Jerry Shuster, the owner of land near the gap, has witnessed an estimated influx of 3,000 migrants per week passing through the gap. He noted that migrants started arriving on his property in May.
According to Shuster, the American border officials were aware of the hole near his property and he had requested them to repair it.
Shuster said that people often suggest calling Washington D.C.
According to 60 Minutes, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has acknowledged that closing the gap is a priority for the agency. However, they have also stated that funding from Congress would be required to address this issue effectively. It is important to note that border patrol agents currently lack the legal authority to prevent individuals from entering through gaps, including the one near Shuster’s home. Their jurisdiction only allows them to arrest migrants after they have entered the country illegally.
Some of the migrants who entered the U.S. at the San Judas Break, and others who are currently crossing four miles east of the gap, originated from China. The number of Chinese migrants attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico is rapidly increasing. In a report by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, it was revealed that 37,000 Chinese citizens were apprehended last year while attempting to illegally cross the border.
Migrants continue to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in record numbers, undeterred by policies aimed at curbing illegal entries. In 2020, approximately two-and-a-half million migrants were encountered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the southern border.
In a narrow 214-213 vote, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas due to concerns over his management of the U.S.-Mexico border. The articles of impeachment accuse Mayorkas of allowing the release of migrants into the country who should have been detained and of providing false information to lawmakers regarding border security.
In response to the impeachment vote, President Biden criticized it as a clear example of unconstitutional partisanship, aimed at unjustly targeting a respected public servant for the sake of petty political maneuvering.
In a regrettable turn of events, the Republicans who are pushing for this unfounded impeachment are simultaneously rejecting bipartisan proposals that Secretary Mayorkas and my administration have diligently worked on to enhance border security. This sudden reversal contradicts their own prior demands for stronger border legislation. President Biden expressed his disappointment on Tuesday, stating that abandoning real solutions at a time when they are most crucial, solely for political gain, is not what the American people anticipate from their leaders.
