Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) slammed former President Trump in an interview early Tuesday, claiming that he is attempting to look moderate on the topic of abortion and that his official position does not reflect any inner “belief.”
“First and foremost, let me state that the right of a woman to choose is a democratic matter. This is about freedom—the ability of women and families to make their own choices,” Pelosi said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“So, when—wwhat’s his name?—said what he said yesterday, he’s either stupid or thinks the rest of us are stupid,” Pelosi added, alluding to President Trump.
Trump unveiled his long-awaited official stance on abortion on Monday, saying that states should be free to enact their own laws and refraining from taking a firm stand on any federal abortion ban.
On Tuesday, Pelosi also questioned press coverage of the statement, which claimed Trump’s attitude was based on a core “belief.”
“He feels immense delight in reversing Roe v. Wade. Takes great pride in it. And then the way the press reported it just made me laugh because it said, ‘Donald Trump thinks that state—’he doesn’t believe anything,” Pelosi remarked. “He believes in his political survival, and that’s what he’s trying to accommodate.”
“But you cannot be even somewhat pro-life. You are either there or not there. People see it. So, he might have outsmarted—well, I hesitate to say outsmarted because, what? It does not appear to apply—but why would the press state ‘he believes?’ ” He does not believe anything.”
The political right reacted differently to Trump’s decision over abortion policy. While some pundits praised the move, pointing out that supporting a tighter abortion restriction would alienate important voting groups ahead of the 2024 presidential election, others chastised the former president, claiming he failed both sides with his middle-ground stance.
