Survey: Majority Of Americans Support Increasing Number Of Border Agents, Immigration Judges

According to a recent survey, a majority of Americans expressed their support for the Biden administration’s decision to increase the number of border patrol agents and immigration judges in response to the ongoing surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The results of the recently released survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center indicate that a majority of the public is in agreement with policy proposals concerning immigration and security at the southern border. These findings come at a time when legislation on this issue is currently at a standstill in the divided Congress.

According to the survey, approximately 58 percent of the participants expressed strong or moderate support for the United States increasing the number of immigration judges and court personnel to expedite the asylum application process. Furthermore, the findings revealed that 64 percent of the respondents strongly or somewhat favored the idea of hiring more border patrol agents.

According to the poll, the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and independents have varying levels of support for hiring more border patrol agents. Specifically, 79 percent of Republicans expressed their support, while 54 percent of Democrats and 56 percent of independents shared the same sentiment.

Approximately half of the participants concurred with the idea of decreasing the number of migrants who are permitted to seek asylum in the United States upon their arrival at the southern border, according to the survey’s findings.

According to the poll, immigration is considered an important issue by just over half of adults, with 58 percent ranking it as such. However, it is still perceived as less significant compared to the economy, health care, crime, or gun policy.

In the latest survey, a noticeable improvement can be seen in President Biden’s handling of immigration, with 31 percent of respondents expressing their approval. However, there has been a decline in the approval rating for Biden’s handling of border security, with only 30 percent of respondents expressing their approval, marking a decrease compared to the previous year.

During his State of the Union address, President Biden urged Congress to pass a border bill, highlighting the prolonged period of unsuccessful negotiations.

The AP-NORC survey, which gathered responses from 1,282 adults between March 21-25, carries a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
