Suspect on the run confesses to cocaine use during pursuit

A man allegedly snorted a bag of cocaine while driving away from police at 100 mph before eventually pulling over.

Dereck Raimey, 45, had been tailgating a tractor-trailer on December 6 while he was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 in Centre County, according to Trooper Shane Eichelberger. Raimey evaded the police for a distance of 20 miles before finally pulling over, added Eichelberger.

During the chase, Raimey’s driving was highly unpredictable, endangering several other vehicles on the road, as stated in the complaint. It is alleged that he even went to the extent of throwing a digital scale out of the car window at one point.

Raimey abruptly halted the vehicle, as recounted by Eichelberger. When troopers tried to extract him and his passenger from the car, Raimey reportedly put up a resistance.

Police reported finding a plastic baggie containing a white residue on the floor of the car. During the interview conducted at the scene, Raimey confessed to snorting cocaine while being chased by the police. Eichelberger noted that white powder was visible on Raimey’s nose during the roadside interview.

Raimey was taken to Mount Nittany Hospital by troopers, where he willingly underwent a blood draw. The test results revealed that he had consumed a sufficient amount of cocaine, leading to the charge of driving under the influence (DUI).

Raimey faced a multitude of charges, including third-degree felony fleeing, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, careless driving, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and restrictions on alcoholic beverages. It is worth noting that no charges were listed for the passenger involved in the incident.

According to Eichelberger, Raimey, a resident of Memphis, Tenn., has a lengthy criminal record. In 2020, he faced charges of human trafficking. Just this July, he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
