Trump urges sanctions and censure against special counsel Jack Smith

Former President Donald Trump has called for the sanction or censure of special counsel Jack Smith. Trump accused Smith of “attacking” the judge in his classified documents case.

Trump commented on Thursday in response to Smith and his team of prosecutors, who strongly believe that Judge Aileen Cannon’s recent ruling was founded on an undisclosed and fundamentally flawed legal premise. The prosecutors expressed their opposition to Cannon’s directive to provide proposed jury instructions for two distinct legal scenarios. Smith emphasized that both of these legal scenarios were flawed.

Prosecutors have requested clarification on Cannon’s position in response to the judge’s order. They need this clarification in order to determine if they can appeal if necessary. The prosecution is specifically asking the judge to decide before the trial whether the Presidential Records Act has any bearing on the unauthorized possession of classified documents. Failing to do so could potentially impede the prosecution of Trump due to the double jeopardy clause in the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits multiple prosecutions for the same offense.

In a morning outburst, Trump launched a scathing attack.

In a message posted to Truth Social, former President Donald Trump criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling him deranged and highlighting his past failures as a prosecutor, including a unanimous decision against him in the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump expressed his belief that Smith should face sanctions or censure for the way he is attacking Judge Aileen Cannon, who is presiding over the case involving what Trump refers to as a “FAKE Documents Hoax” in Florida.

According to Trump, Smith should not be involved in the case.

“He should not even be permitted to take part in this fraudulent case, where I, unlike the dishonest Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and others, fall under the jurisdiction of the Presidential Records Act,” Trump expressed. “I have done nothing wrong, but Biden has, and they allowed him to escape any consequences. How did that happen, Jack? It seems like a two-tiered system of justice. It’s nothing short of election interference!”

Trump has maintained his innocence in the face of 40 felony charges. The allegations against him claim that he unlawfully retained classified military documents, distributed them to unauthorized individuals, and attempted to evade government efforts to recover the materials.

Trump is set to have a rematch against President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election. In addition to his electoral battle, Trump also finds himself entangled in multiple legal cases. These cases are spread across New York, Georgia, and Washington D.C. To address his mounting legal bills, Trump has been utilizing millions of dollars from his campaign contributions.

In addition to the ongoing legal battles, Trump is also appealing a civil case in New York where he is facing a $464 million fine. To proceed with the appeal, he has posted a bond of $175 million.
