U.S. Ports To Receive Increased Cybersecurity Measures Through Executive Order Signed By Joe Biden

Aiexpress –  President Joe Biden took action by signing an executive order with the aim of bolstering cybersecurity measures at U.S. ports in order to fend off potential hackers.

Biden has taken a significant step in addressing maritime cybersecurity threats by granting the Department of Homeland Security the authority to tackle these issues. With this executive order, the focus is on enhancing cybersecurity standards and bolstering security in port networks.

The Coast Guard has implemented a new policy requiring the reporting of all cyber incidents or threats that pose a risk to vessels, harbors, ports, or waterway facilities. This policy gives the Coast Guard authority to regulate the movement of vessels that are identified or suspected to be involved in cyber threats to American maritime infrastructure.

The owners and operators of cranes made in China and located at U.S. seaports will receive a directive from the Coast Guard. This directive will instruct them to “take a series of actions” with regards to the cranes and their associated systems.

During a press conference, Rear Adm. John Vann expressed concerns about the cranes, stating that they “pose a potential cyber threat.”

While Chinese cranes may be found at over 80% of US ports, they can collect data and disrupt port operations, he claimed.

The White House has issued directives to crane operators in order to reduce the risk of potential attacks.

Concerns over possible supply chain disruptions due to hackers have escalated, according to U.S. officials, including FBI Director Christopher Wray.

According to the White House, the prosperity of America is directly connected to maritime trade and the comprehensive network of ports, terminals, vessels, waterways, and land-side connections that make up the nation’s Marine Transportation System.

Securing our critical infrastructure is a top priority for our nation, especially in today’s ever-evolving threat landscape.

The Coast Guard is taking new measures to enhance cyber risk management actions related to Chinese cranes, while also fostering the revival of domestic crane manufacturing in the United States.

According to the White House, the proposed rule aims to enhance digital systems by implementing minimum cybersecurity requirements that adhere to international and industry-recognized standards in order to effectively handle cyberthreats.
