Ukrainian President Zelensky says the US is ‘not funding’ war in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized on Sunday that the United States is not providing funding for the war in his country. Instead, he highlighted that the U.S. is actively aiding in the protection of democracy in the region.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker inquired about the duration of American support for the war in Ukraine. Acknowledging the opposition to sending more aid to the country, Welker highlighted the concerns. In response, Zelensky clarified that while Ukraine is actively involved in the fighting, the United States is primarily supplying munitions rather than directly participating in the conflict.

“The United States is not providing financial support for the war in Ukraine. Their main objective is to uphold freedom and democracy across Europe. Ukraine is actively engaged in the fight, bravely deploying their finest men and women to the front lines. This collective effort serves to stabilize the region and ultimately benefits all countries within NATO,” stated Zelensky, while speaking through a translator.

“It benefits everyone, including the United States, as the leading member of NATO. The U.S. Army no longer has to bear the burden of defending NATO countries. The Ukrainians are now taking on that responsibility, with support from the civilized world in the form of ammunition. I believe this is a wise decision and we should continue to provide our support,” he emphasized.

The House has given its approval to a significant foreign aid package, which has now been sent to the Senate. This package entails approximately $61 billion in aid for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
