Days after the incident, a chance encounter led Portage rescuers to the I-94 driver: ‘He had virtually lost all hope.’

Mario Garcia, a resident of Hobart, Indiana, and his son-in-law were on a leisurely stroll along Salt Creek around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Their intention was to scout for suitable fishing spots. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when they stumbled upon a truck that had crashed underneath an overpass on Interstate 94, near the Portage exit.

Garcia expressed, “No one was present to offer assistance. It seems unlikely that anyone could have noticed him. It was sheer luck that we spotted the gleam of the wreckage through the gaps in the trees. Our curiosity led us to investigate. The situation could have turned out differently if we hadn’t ventured out or failed to notice him. However, I am relieved that we did.”

Garcia moved the airbag aside and gently touched the man, causing him to jolt awake, startling both of them.

According to him, he had been there for quite a while and had almost given up hope since there was no one around. He mentioned that if just one more day had passed, the situation would have been completely different.
