Democratic Candidate Says Florida Supreme Court Abortion Rulings Could Have Major Impact In Senate Race

Florida Democratic Senate candidate and former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-Fla.) believes that two significant rulings on abortion by the state’s Supreme Court will have a profound impact on the upcoming Senate race in November. Mucarsel-Powell considers these decisions to be a game changer for the state of Florida.

In a memo obtained exclusively by The Hill on Tuesday, Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign highlighted the vulnerabilities of incumbent Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) on the issue of abortion. They linked him to the state’s recently implemented six-week ban on the procedure. Furthermore, her campaign criticized Scott’s stance on in vitro fertilization (IVF), alleging that he would jeopardize access to this process.

Less than 24 hours after the state’s highest court issued two rulings, a memo has been released. One of the rulings upheld Florida’s 15-week abortion ban, while the other ruling gave approval for a ballot measure that would safeguard access to abortion if it is passed in November.

“The memo emphasizes that the recent rulings will make abortion rights a prominent issue for Floridians during the upcoming November elections. It states that Rick Scott’s endorsement of both a nationwide abortion ban and Florida’s harsh and extreme abortion ban poses a significant challenge to his re-election campaign. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is actively confronting Rick Scott’s stance on abortion rights.”

In a statement on Monday, Scott responded to the rulings and portrayed Mucarsel-Powell as holding extreme views on abortion.

Scott stated that it is crucial to put in efforts to increase the affordability of adoption. He emphasized the significance of protecting IVF, an issue close to him, his family, and many individuals in Florida. Scott also highlighted the consensus among Floridians that there should be reasonable limitations on abortion.

“My opponent’s stance on abortion is deeply concerning. She opposes any limits on abortion, even when a baby can feel pain and suck their thumb, right up until the baby’s due date,” he passionately expressed. “She is unbothered by the horrifying act of crushing a baby’s skull at nine months and is fine with leaving a newborn baby in a corner, crying and abandoned. This level of extremism is truly alarming.”

Florida Democrats are confident that the decision will serve as a rallying cry for voters, motivating them to come out in full force in the upcoming November elections. However, defeating Scott, a formidable opponent, will not be an easy task. As the state’s former governor, he has established a strong presence and enjoys broad recognition among the electorate.

According to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, the race is categorized as “likely Republican.”

In a recent interview with The Hill, Mucarsel-Powell emphasized how the abortion issue serves as a unifying force for voters.

According to her, the presence of abortion as a ballot issue consistently motivates voters to participate in elections.

Democrats and advocates for abortion rights celebrated the endorsement of the ballot measure on Monday, highlighting the recent successes of Democrats in addressing abortion-related issues in traditionally Republican states. Just last week, Democrats were able to win a state House seat in deeply conservative Alabama by making abortion a key focus of their campaign. Additionally, in Ohio, supporters of abortion rights voted to protect access to abortion by incorporating it into the state constitution.

In her race, Mucarsel-Powell is not the only Democrat looking to take advantage of the issue. Maryland, Montana, and Arizona, all of which have closely watched Senate races this cycle, have abortion-related measures on the ballot.

In response to the state’s decision, President Biden’s reelection campaign has expressed optimism, recognizing the potential for opportunities. They have released their own memorandum on Monday, highlighting their perspective.

Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Biden’s campaign manager, expressed the belief that President Biden and Vice President Harris’ dedication to countering the assaults on reproductive freedom by Donald Trump and Rick Scott will play a crucial role in mobilizing and enlarging the voter base in Florida. Rodríguez further highlighted the strong support for abortion rights among the majority of Floridians.

Rodriguez added that Florida Republicans will have to defend their support for this abortion ban, which he described as cruel and indefensible.
