Former Obama Strategist Issues Unexpected Warning Regarding Trump’s Ballot Case

David Axelrod, a CNN commentator and former adviser to President Barack Obama, expressed his concern about the potential consequences if the Supreme Court were to uphold the decision made by Colorado’s highest court regarding the removal of Donald Trump from the presidential primary ballot in 2024. According to Axelrod, there could be a significant and intense response to such a ruling.

Just a day before SCOTUS is set to hear oral arguments on Thursday, Axelrod made an appearance on CNN. The discussion centered around the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove Trump from the state’s ballot. The court cited the insurrection clause in the Constitution as the basis for their ruling.

In December, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows invoked the clause to remove the former president from the state’s primary ballot, as she did again recently.

Axelrod, expressing his concern, stated that if the decision to remove Trump from the ballot were to be upheld, it would “rip the country apart.” In an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, he further emphasized that such a move would cause significant disruption in our nation.

“I am concerned about the potential for a significant and concerning reaction to this. The reason for my concern is partly due to the presence of Donald Trump. Our institutions are already facing a great deal of cynicism, and it is the strength of our democracy that relies on these very institutions,” expressed Axelrod.

According to some critics, following the path suggested by the Colorado court may be seen as a subversion by many voters, leading to a strong reaction.

Axelrod expressed astonishment at the fact that, more than three years after the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump still holds his current position.

“I’m not here to defend Donald Trump or act as a legal expert. However, it’s important for the Supreme Court to weigh the potential consequences of such a decision,” he explained.

“I can’t help but imagine the scenario where the Supreme Court decides to eliminate the top Republican candidate from the ballot, essentially denying the American people the chance to vote for him.”
