New Jersey Community Mourns Loss Of Respected Sheriff Who Died By Suicide In A Restaurant

Aiexpress – A sheriff in New Jersey tragically took his own life at a restaurant on Tuesday, leaving the county in deep mourning.

Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik tragically took his own life in the bathroom of Toros, a restaurant in Clifton, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sheriff Berdnik, who had previously served as a police officer, had been fulfilling the role of county sheriff since 2011. It is a heartbreaking loss for the community.

According to WABC, Pat Calligon, the President of the New Jersey Policemen’s Benevolent Association, expressed his admiration for a person, saying, “He’s always been an absolute gentleman, and it was a pleasure working with him. I wish there was something we could have done.”

Purple and black bunting adorned the public safety building in Passaic County as a poignant tribute to the sheriff.

“I fondly called Richard Berdnik America’s sheriff, as he was not only an exceptional law enforcement leader but also a cherished friend,” expressed Mayor Andre Sayegh of Paterson.


Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey expressed his sadness upon learning about the passing of Berdnik.

Governor Murphy expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of Sheriff Berdnik, whom he considered a dear friend. He emphasized the significant impact of Berdnik’s leadership and stated that he and Tammy were grateful to have known him. The Governor extended his heartfelt condolences and prayers to Monica, Sheriff Berdnik’s wife, their four adult children, and the entire Passaic County Sheriff’s Office team. This statement was shared on X.

The recent state of the sheriff’s office has been filled with turmoil.

In the week leading up to Berdnik’s death, the FBI arrested two sergeants and a sheriff’s officer on charges of allegedly beating a detainee at the Passaic County Jail in 2021. Additionally, Berdnik made the decision to lay off 29 sheriff’s officers as a result of the jail’s closure.
