Aiexpress – On Sunday, tragedy struck when a pickup truck driver fatally struck a 62-year-old woman who was walking along East 16th Street in Sheepshead Bay.
Chuyan Chen, a resident of Sheepshead Bay, was walking across Avenue X in the designated crosswalk when a 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck turned left from Avenue X onto southbound East 16th Street and hit her. The incident was reported by the NYPD.
Around 4 p.m., police from the 61st Precinct went to a 911 call about a crash and found Chen lying in the street with a head injury. They took Chen to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn by ambulance, but she was already dead from her injuries by 7:27 p.m. Chen lives only a quarter of a mile from where the accident happened.
According to the police, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, a 27-year-old male, stayed at the scene and did not sustain any injuries. The driver’s identity has not been disclosed yet, and the NYPD Highway District Collision Squad is currently conducting an investigation. It is uncertain at this time whether the driver had come to a complete stop at the stop sign on Avenue X before making the turn.
The data compiled by NYC Crash Mapper reveals that the area where Chen was struck on Sunday has not experienced a significant number of severe car accidents in recent years. From January 2020 to January 2024, the intersection of Avenue X and East 16 Street had only one collision resulting in one injury. The blocks surrounding the crash site also exhibit similar statistics. However, it is worth noting that this incident occurred less than a week after a 52-year-old woman was fatally hit by a turning pickup truck in Bay Ridge, just a few blocks away from her residence. Furthermore, this unfortunate event follows a series of accidents in which several seniors were either killed or suffered serious injuries in various crashes throughout southern Brooklyn.
