A military jet declared an on-board emergency and safely landed at Atlantic City International Airport on Thursday. As a result, the airfield was temporarily closed to allow first responders to address the situation.
According to officials from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the F-16C Fighting Falcon jet safely landed at the airport around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
The pilot of the aircraft, which belonged to a “visiting unit,” had to request an emergency landing for reasons that are still unclear.
According to a spokesperson from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, pilots have the authority to declare an in-flight emergency for various reasons. This includes situations where they deem it necessary to land promptly.
The military officials stated that the firefighters from the 177th Fighter Wing, who work at the property, along with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the airport’s manager, promptly responded to the scene.
According to officials from the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the airfield had to be temporarily closed to allow emergency vehicles to prepare for the arrival of the aircraft.
