A man has been sentenced for the 2021 Independence murder of a three-year-old boy on Christmas Eve

A 3-year-old child was tragically killed on Christmas Eve in 2021, and this week a 24-year-old man from Independence was sentenced for the crime.

Jackson County Judge Jennifer Phillips has sentenced Ashton Cleveland to a 10-year prison term for the crime of involuntary manslaughter. In addition to this, Cleveland has also been given a four-year sentence for leaving the scene of the accident and a one-year term for second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. It is important to note that all of these sentences will run concurrently with each other.

In October, Cleveland pleaded guilty to all counts.

On Christmas Eve, as the Radford family was driving home to bake cookies, Cleveland collided with their vehicle near the Truman and Nolan roads intersection, according to the police. The impact of the crash caused the Radford family’s car to spin out of control and hit an electrical box.
