Two exceptional high school students from Alabama have been chosen to take part in the highly esteemed U.S. Senate Youth Program for the year 2024.
The program aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the Senate and the federal government as a whole through a week-long educational experience and scholarship. It is specifically designed for two exceptional high school students from each state who have a keen interest in pursuing careers in public service.
Ashland Michelle Ross from Satsuma and Edward Shujie Pang from Vestavia Hills have been selected by the U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP) Advisory Committee to serve as delegates representing the state of Alabama.
Senator Katie Britt, who is a member of the advisory committee, commended the two students and emphasized the significance of the USSYP program.
“Ashland and Edward exemplify the exceptional talent and intelligence found in our state, and I am delighted that they have been selected as Alabama’s delegates for the 2024 USSYP,” expressed Britt. “I eagerly anticipate their presence in our nation’s capital in March, where I can personally extend my congratulations for their remarkable achievements.”
“These exceptional young Alabamians have a chance to transform their lives through this opportunity. I urge them to keep striving for public service, to excel in their academic pursuits, and to become leaders in their communities.”
Ross and Pang will participate in the 62nd Annual Washington Week from March 2-9 as part of the program. This experience aims to enhance their knowledge and comprehension of the federal government. Additionally, they will have the unique opportunity to engage in meetings and briefings with congressional members, a Supreme Court justice, leaders of different cabinet agencies, and even the President.
The USSYP, which was established in 1962, aims to foster a genuine collaboration among government officials, state and national education leaders, and the future leaders of America.
Every student delegate is awarded a generous $10,000 scholarship for their undergraduate college education. This scholarship can be utilized at any college or university of their preference, with an emphasis on pursuing courses in government and history.
