Residents have the opportunity to earn money through the Notice of Reward Program. This program offers rewards to individuals who provide information about crimes committed against postal workers or crimes committed by civilians that could endanger postal employees or the public.
In Alabama, individuals can earn anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000 through the reward program, depending on the severity of the offense committed.
The US Marines have also released details about the program, including a comprehensive description of each offense and the corresponding amount that individuals would be eligible to receive. According to the publication, the following information is provided:
Murder or manslaughter: The unlawful killing of any officer or employee while engaged in or on account of the performance of his or her official duties. Reward amount: $100,000.
Bombs or explosives: Mailing or causing to be mailed any bombs or explosives that may kill or harm another, or injure the mail or other property, or the placing of any bomb or explosive in a postal facility, vehicle, depository or receptacle established, approved, or designated by the Postmaster General for the receipt of mail. Reward amount: $100,000.
Offenses Involving the Mailing of Threating Communications: Mailing or causing to be mailed any threatening communications, actual or simulated weapons of mass destruction, dangerous chemicals, or biological materials, that may kill or injure another, or injure the mail or other property. Reward amount: $100,000.
Assault on Postal Employee: Forcibly assaulting any officer or employee of the Postal Service while engaged in or on account of the performance of his or her official duties. Reward amount: $50,000.
Controlled Dangerous Substances, Illegal Drugs, or Cash Proceeds from Illegal Drugs: Mailing or causing to be mailed any controlled substances, illegal drugs, or the proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs. Reward amount: $50,000.
Money Laundering: Mailing or causing to be mailed any money that has been obtained illegally, or the use of postal money orders to launder illicit proceeds. Reward amount: $50,000.
Meter or Postage Tampering: The unlawful use, reuse, or forgery of postage stamps, postage meter stamps, permit imprints, or other postage; or the use, sale, or possession with intent to use or sell any used, forged, or counterfeited postage stamp or other postage. Reward amount: $50,000.
Robbery: Robbery or attempted robbery of any custodian of any mail, money, or other property of the United States under the control and jurisdiction of the Postal Service. Reward amount: $50,000.
Child Exploitation: The use of the mail to traffic inappropriate images or facilitate any other crime relating to the exploitation of a minor. Reward amount: $50,000.
Burglary of a Post Office: Breaking into, or attempting to break into, a Post Office™, station, branch, a building used wholly or partly as a Post Office, or any building or area in a building where the business of the Postal Service is conducted, with intent to commit a larceny or other depredation therein. Reward amount: $10,000.
Postal Money Order Offense: Theft or possession of stolen postal money orders or any Postal Service equipment used to imprint money orders; or altering, counterfeiting, forging, unlawful uttering, or passing of postal money orders. Reward amount: $10,000.
Theft, possession, destruction or obstruction of mail: Theft or attempted theft of any mail, or the contents thereof, or the theft of money or any other property of the United States under the custody and control of the Postal Service from any custodian, postal vehicle, railroad depot, airport, or other transfer point, Post Office, or station, receptacle, or depository established, approved, or designated by the Postmaster General for the receipt of mail; or destroying, obstructing, or retarding the passage of mail, or any carrier or conveyance carrying the mail.
