Migrants in this City Receiving Higher Monthly SNAP Benefits than Alabama SNAP Recipients

In 2022, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) reported that 761,100 Alabama residents received SNAP Benefits.

The maximum monthly amount of SNAP benefits that a single household can receive, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) SNAP application, is $281. Each additional person in the household can add $211 to this amount, with a maximum household size of eight members used to determine the SNAP benefit amount.

According to a report by Newsweek on February 5, 2024, migrants residing in New York City are now eligible for a new program that provides them with $350 per month to be used for purchasing food and baby supplies.

Use is limited exclusively to local bodegas, grocery stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores to ensure that city funds are going to food and baby supplies. The Office of Mayor Eric Adams stressed that the cards will act similarly to SNAP benefits and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards and that the program is a “cost-saving measure” that will save the city $600,000 a month.

All participants in the program had to sign an affidavit confirming that the funds would be used for their intended purposes. Any individual who violated this affidavit would be promptly removed from the program.
