The former president, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, stated last week that his legal troubles, which include many felony indictments, had improved his popularity among black Americans.
“I got indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing,” Trump remarked at a South Carolina Black Conservative event. “And many people say that’s why black people like me—because they’ve been hurt so horribly and discriminated against, and they see me as being discriminated against. It’s been fairly incredible, but maybe there’s something there.”
Black leaders and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) criticized the comments.
“This may surprise Trump, but pushing tired tropes, wannabe Jordans, and mugshot t-shirts isn’t going to win over black voters who have suffered through record-high unemployment and skyrocketing uninsured rates under his leadership,” said Sarafina Chitika, the DNC’s national press secretary, in a statement.
The White House has weighed in following Jean-Pierre’s statements on Tuesday.
“This is not what Joe Biden would like to see. “He’s always been very clear that hate has no place here,” Jean-Pierre added. “That is exactly what we need to hear now. Not a divisive, repulsive speech from a past president that rips apart a traumatic history that a group, the black community, has experienced.”
