Winter storm warning issued for Kansas as snowfall expected

WICHITA, Kan. – A winter storm is on the horizon, set to begin in western Kansas Thursday night and gradually move eastward early Friday. This anticipated storm will primarily bring snowfall, with no significant wind or ice. Additionally, there are no indications of dangerous wind chills in the forecast for the upcoming days.

According to the current storm trajectory, the areas from Medicine Lodge to Newton and Marion can expect heavier snowfall, with accumulations of 4-6 inches. Meanwhile, western Kansas will likely see 2-3 inches of snow. North of I-70, snowfall amounts will be lighter, ranging from trace amounts to 2 inches. The morning rush hour may be impacted by messy road conditions, but conditions are expected to improve later in the afternoon as the snow tapers off from west to east. Temperatures will reach the mid 30s throughout the day.

Saturday will bring improved weather conditions for travel as the clouds disperse. Expect temperatures to reach the mid to upper 30s, accompanied by gentle winds.

Another powerful winter storm is expected to arrive early next week, bringing a mix of rain and snow to central and south central Kansas. Meanwhile, western Kansas will experience continuous snowfall throughout Monday and into Monday night. What sets this storm apart is the significant amount of wind it will bring. Gusts of 30-40 miles per hour are anticipated, resulting in blowing snow and near blizzard-like conditions.

Dangerously cold weather may be on the horizon for the Plains at the end of next week. Stay tuned for updates.
